Fiskardo, Kefalonia GREECE - Guide to Fiskardo holidays
Fiskardo, built in a bay, is a traditional fishing village that is as pretty as a painting and attracts many summer holidaymakers. Remains of its former gentility can be seen in the narrow alleys, the balconies full of flowers, and the numerous protected 18th century houses. Amongst the little boats and fishing vessels anchored at the jetty of the tiny harbour, in front of the shops, tavernas and bars, are numerous private yachts, giving the settlement a cosmopolitan air. Sights worth visiting are the Byzantine church, which has an ancient relief of the Dioskouroi, and the so called throne of Queen Fiskarda, a recess carved in the rock. On Kavos hill are the remains of an Early Christian basilica, and there is a Roman cemetery in this area. Traces of a settlement considered to be the earliest in the Ionian islands have been found just outside Fiskardo village. Fiskardo is surrounded by beautiful villages and clean beaches. To the west of Fiskardo are Yermenata, Antipata and Psilithra. The picturesque villages of Tselentata and Evreti on the south and east coast face Ithaka (Ithaki). In this zone in north east Kefalonia you can also visit the Thematon monastery, dedicated to the Virgin and built on the summit of a verdant hill
Busy in the height of the season with moored yachts, the daily ferry and boat trips leaving from the harbour, Fiskardo is a hive of activity, especially as it is the only mariner with electricity and a water-supply with plenty of docking space. The tree-lined bay, complete with fishermen's houses and small shops, makes it a popular place to sit and watch the world go by and there is a fine selection of restaurants, tavernas and cafes to tempt your appetite.
Stroll around the headland to the small beach or visit one of the many coves nestling along the coastline, some only accessible by boat. The prettiest of these is at Foki, only 1.5 km southeast of Fiskardo - about a twenty- minute walk. Too much sunbathing and feeling the need to cool down - then meander through the hills under the shade of the surrounding cypress, pine and olive trees. Though there are many places to stay here hotels, studios and villas for rent most of the tour operators use Fiskardo as a day excursion from the main resorts. This is a truly beautiful place and not to be missed even if it is a 2 hour drive from the south of Kefalonia island.
