Kefalos, Kos GREECE - Guide to Kefalos holidays
Kos island narrows to about 2km before expanding into the rugged volcanic area of Kefalos.
Kefalos village sits high on a headland with views along the whole south coast with the old town above and the sprawling bay of Kamari below. The old town is an attractive mix of whitewashed houses with colourful doors and windows. Views from the hill fort are impressive but the going is steep on foot. Even higher, and forming an impressive backdrop are the twin peaks of Mt Zini and Mt Latia, both spoiled by radio masts and Zini by extensive quarrying. This is is also the end of the line for island buses and an outpost for more adventurous hikes into the western wilderness that ends on the rugged peninsular at Cape Kikkelo. Regular tours are offered to a nearby Byzantine church, to the ruins of the ancient Astypalia amphitheatre (once thought to be island capital) and to a cave at Aspri Petra said to be inhabited in Neolithic times. There are series of tiny beaches and coves on the west coast though the area is wild. North of Kefalos is Limnionas which has twin beaches each side of the peninsular and a small fishing harbour
Good local produce is available in Kefalos village Regular buses run to cosmopolitan Kos Town for serious shopping. Kefalos holidays usually include a visit to the church of Aghios Nikolaos on the tiny island of Kastri that faces the resort. Boats ferry visitors to Paradise beach and Marcos beach. Favourite Kefalos holiday excursions include the hot springs at Agios Fokas, the ancient site at Asklepeion, the Astypalia amphitheatre and Aspri Petra Cave. Other popular Kefalos holiday excursions are to Aghios Ioannis monastery and the volcano on the island of Nissyros.

Holidays in Kefalos - Kos GREECE
Kefalos is 24 miles from Kos Town, 10 miles from the airport and is on the south-west corner of the island with miles of sandy beaches to the south and the wilder parts of Kos to the west. Kefalos is a hill village with whitewashed houses that combines with the busier beach resort of Kamari below. Holidays in Kefalos offer a little traditional charm along with the amenities and beach life of a typical Kos resort. Kefalos is a relaxed quiet place which has kept its whitewashed houses, colourful narrow lanes and old-style tavernas. Kefalos has a medieval castle and a famous windmill sits above the village. Excellent views of Kamari Bay and the coast can be had from this village set on a headland.
Nightlife on Kefalos is centred on laid-back tavernas and relaxed bars. The scene on the coast below is very much busier with dozens of bars and restaurants aimed at British tourists rather than the locals.

Information about Kefalos beach
Most of the beaches also have plenty of tavernas and bars. Holidays in Kefalos can explore several beaches which become progressively more isolated further west. Paradise beach is a favourite with plenty of facilities and good shallow water for children and swimming, along with other well-known spots like Hawaii Beach and Magic Beach. The beach in Kamari, the nearest to Kefalos, is a stretch of sand and shingle popular with sunbathers and snorkellers. Limnionas beach to the north is a little quieter and has a pretty harbour and two more good beaches. Kefalos holidays can enjoy plenty of watersports like waterskiing, jet skiing, sailingSS, parasailing and windsurfing. This stretch of coast is dotted with rocky outcrops and tiny islands. Boats are available to explore the more isolated beaches to the west.

Getting to Kefalos - Kos
Getting to Kefalos is very easy specially during the summer season (beginning of May till the end of October). There are frequent charter flights to Kos from most European countries and Kos airport is only 17 kilometers away, less than ten minutes by taxi - that's if you haven't booked a package holiday to Kefalos. From mainland Greece you can get to the island either by plain or ferry. Every day there are three flights from / to Athens airport by Olympic Airlines and another three by Aegean Airlines. From Piraeus port there's at least one big ferryboat liner daily to Kos island and other Dodecanese islands. The port of the island is located in Kos town which is also the capital, about twenty five minutes away by taxi and a bit longer by bus.

Kefalos Kos holiday Reviews
I'm loving Kefalos! - Emma. Date of travel: Jul 2006
Where do I start, perfect for anyone wanting a relaxing holiday, not too crowded, plenty of lovely beaches to choose from. Lots of lovely taverna's and bars (not at all rowdy) although a couple do have music until late but not what we're used to - very well behaved! Captain Johns is my fave restaurant, also like STOP IN, Rainbows, Maria's, Sebastians, Zefyros, dont like Scorpios -very expensive compared to the rest of the bay. All locals are lovely people and they'll remember you next year! Once you've been you'll go back every year!
I want to go back - Harold & Brenda. Date of travel: May 2006
To all of those great folk who gave us information on Kafalos especially Jacki we would like to thank you all for assisting us in having a wonderful holiday in Kefalos. We would like to return many times but once you become 80yrs the Travel Insurance is prohibitive. But for a wonderful holiday choose Kefalos. Kind regards and best wishes, Harold & Brenda
Kefalos...see you soon! - Robert C, Carrie H. Date of travel: Aug 2006
The island of Kos has a lot to offer, tours etc. The 3 island tour was fantastic although I would recommend going to Kos town and booking it yourself there are plenty of boats to choose from, and its cheaper that way too. In fact it was cheaper all round to do things yourself rather than go through an operator, however trust tours are still a good option. The beaches are great too, found ourselves a great spot by the old ruins to do some snorkling and swimmimg. There's popeyes bar on the strip which is a must; the guys great and always giving away free shots, Aussie bar also has great food. In fact there are so many to choose from in Kefalos, they are all quite good. I have to say that if you are like me and enjoy a good English breakfast you have to go to the Riverside Cafe! Fantastic food and great people. Watch out in Kos Town!! You will be accosted by all the cafe's for business they fight for it big time.. but its all good fun. A must see is the Volcano on Nisyross (Those busses have no business being on them roads), its a little hairy going up the hill. All in our holiday to Kefalos was the best holiday I have had in a long time... you have to see it
